The paper attempts to highlight the historical roots of mediation which has become a modern way of solving legal disputes in recent years. Mediation as dispute resolution does not only deal with private law but also with civil litigation, international and religious disputes. The paper is an excursion into the development of mediation on European and international level. Furthermore, the paper presents the important persons who made significant contributions to the concept of mediation.
